Hi, I’m Christie!
I’ve been a Colorado-based journalist, content writer, and editor for over a decade. I also design websites, create podcasts, and photograph for my own stories. It seems I can’t choose one thing, so I chose them all.
If you live in my home state of Louisiana, you may have seen my award-winning culture, history, adventure, and food writing in 64 Parishes or Country Roads Magazine. I’ve also written articles for Dining Out Denver, Scalawag, The Telegraph UK, and HuffPost Personal.
Most recently, I was on staff at WalletHub.com as a content writer, editor, analyst, and media representative, so you may have seen me representing WalletHub studies on TV in the past year. I was the gal with the jungle of houseplants in the background.
Content Writing
For the past five years, I’ve followed the ins and outs of the ever-changing SEO landscape as a content writer and analyst for WalletHub.com, and I now write and edit content for a variety of food blogs with WayWith. With SEO best-practices in tow, I love to bring journalistic storytelling to content writing. I especially enjoy the challenge of keeping the audience present in our time of constantly-shrinking attention spans.
My specialties are blog content, topic deep-dives, and guides. I have the most experience in the personal finance and food niches, but I love research and am not afraid to jump into something I know nothing about.
If you keep reading, you’ll see that I have a lot of niches.
Journalism
Of all the types of writing I’ve done, journalism feels the most like home to me. My early career was spent covering arts and entertainment in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where I interviewed talented local artists and musicians along with famous acts that toured through town. I developed a love of pieces that allowed me to write about my experiences, such as the time I spent 24 hours in an all-night bowling alley to report the goings-on, and that time I infiltrated a dance krewe to march in a Mardi Gras parade. I wish those clips were still online, but I have paper copies if you’re really curious.
Since 2012, I have freelanced for many different publications, and have covered everything from the tea-growing industry in South Louisiana to unique representations of race and culture within tarot decks.
These days, I often write about foodways, history, and natural disasters, and how these things shape us. Since moving to Colorado’s Western Slope in 2020, with the Colorado River (actually) in my backyard, I hope to write more about geology and water issues in the Southwest.
Web Design
I co-own Spindle Digital Agency with my good friend Ellis Thompson. Spindle offers web design, brand photography, graphic design, brand books, accessibility audits, and so much more. Ask about our discounts for nonprofits and women-owned small businesses.
Podcasting
In 2021, I jumped into podcasting with both feet. The Western Colorado Writers’ Forum allowed a partner and I to produce and launch their official podcast, supported by grant funding.
Podcasting taught me how to navigate a DAW, record clean audio, pace an interview for listener consumption, and so many other things. The podcast took a hiatus in 2024, but we’re hoping to have it back for a third season in 2025.
Photography
Back in 2011, I borrowed a friend’s camera with the idea that a journalist with photography skills could cover more ground. A few years later, I married that friend, and we photographed weddings together all over the Rocky Mountains and Colorado’s front range. That experience made me a better photographer, and I now shoot for most of my own stories with my Nikon D750 and off-camera flash.
